Encountering and conversing with an stranger: a strange world of AI we are diving in!
As we know from the readings of public and counter-publics forming and connecting as tribes, I encountered an exciting conversation with strangers. As we know AI changing and helping people make generative art ideas come to life, during this conversation with a stranger who showed me a demo of making a logo using ChatGPT and Dall-E 2 though it seemed to me a promising tool for ideation I never knew how close in details it can perform as during my strange encounter with an stranger.
I said Hi to a stranger working on his laptop on the 2nd floor of Harbour Center near the tree lounge area ( near the publishing lab ) and then we started off talking about comp-sci as a major in my first year of university I was pursuing major before pivoting to front end developer role. The stranger’s name was “Steven” he said he likes com-sci and was also interested in becoming a full-stack engineer. He mentioned due to Chat-GPT and Dall-E he believes that pursuing this dream is possible even though he doesn’t know much about the design he mentioned generative AI can help him streamline his vision. I mentioned to him that I am a UX/UI designer and believe Midjourney(another generative AI art model for artists) has helped me ideate faster, I showed him some of the generations I made before.
After seeing the results he asked me to write a logo prompt mentioning, “ a logo of SFU with trees in the middle” to compare and contrast the accuracy of the two generative AI models, He liked the visual aspects of the design but mentioned it lacked details that he was looking for for example the text in the logo didn’t mention SFU and were a bit too abstract I agreed to his comments and then he offered me to write the same prompt in Chat-GPT and Dall-E2, seeing the results I was astonished as before this I had not used Dall-E2 image generation and to my surprise, the text accuracy was better in the logo’s that it generated even though the visually it was weak with making the trees look abstract it was accurate on producing a centred align logo of SFU with a tree in the middle.
As someone who makes logos for professional work, I got a bit worried about the fact on how fast and almost accurate the representation made, it needed some professional Photoshop editing and illustration help to vectorize but it was a bit jarring to see how that nowadays uses AI to streamline this process, I mentioned that as a UX person yes it still lacks the human aspects of what will make this a recognizable and memorable logo but it is simply better than starting from scratch and a black piece of paper, a true friend for ideation. He mentioned he pays 20cad for Chat-GPT and Dall-E and I realized that I pay 15cad for only Mid-journey which is only a generative model to produce art and doesn’t include extra branding guidelines that Chat-GPT offers.
In reflection on this encounter, I understood how fast the line of generative AI art is moving and how relying on one platform is not enough for a better and more accurate stream of creations, things in line with AI move logarithmically meaning we can’t imagine how fast it can become better once it reaches a level of excellence, this reminds me of the time of renaissance when anyone can become anything they imagine to be… the times when an artist was doctor, chemist, engineer and even a detective if he needed to be ~ Leonardo Da Vinci “There are three classes of people: those who see, those who see when they are shown, those who do not see.”
