Star Designing Yourself Vs Corporate Website.
Star

For the Love of UI 24" Design Hackathon by Emily Carr

In the span of 5 days we (a team of four) were tasked to modernized and improve the corporate website for our client : Cafe Cittadella.

The current website was made in 2010 and since than have changed ownership. Since than the cafe choose to add Happy hours for their alcoholic beverages, they wanted that to be reflected in the homepage, a new menu page, an additional doordash page and most importantly adding a event hall booking page that will alow customers to  understand that the cafe is more than just a unique heritage cafe but a venue for booking their events and where they can also drink and bring food. Located in the heart of Vancouver with two stories space

During the first 2 days we did a heuristic evaluation and according to the Hick’s law also mentioned by Mauve says:

Minimize choices when response times are critical to decrease decision time. · Break complex tasks into smaller steps in order to decrease cognitive load

Design wise yes it was too simple and confusing especially with a pdf menu page, hence they needed our.

Apart from already knowing what we need to implement the real question than was design was which route to take

One a personalized experience that will help users in our survey conducted pool to enjoy the experience of surfing this site and getting to know more about their Brand

VS

A corporate coffee website with modern interactions that will engage the audience’s attention and ease their navigation experience.

During a lot of back and forth with this design approach we in our final day redesigned the website keeping the corporate look in mind as  the video will explain , as our mentor mentioned the reason these corporate cookie cutter websites work is because when designing UI we have to be 90% familiar with the navigation and 10% brand new exciting experience, that way even cookie cutter websites like Nike and Netflix don’t change much but 10% enough to be effective. (i.e Nike using hover states than carousels while having the same layout for last 10 years ) Apple using the same layout of one pager and bento box layout like this site since 2010 yet spice it up with 3d scroling making it exciting and effective at the same time.

Though I am still learning to do web design this valuable advice will stick with me in my journey as a UX/UI designer, despite no matter how much personality and creativity you put in your design our job as designers is to communicate in the most easiest and familiar ways to our audience so that they don’t quite on us!
